Soil Health - Intro to Soil Health, Online plus 10/16/14 field day Dodgeville (Linden) WI
This online introductory course provides an overview of the importance of soil health to crop production and dives into the three primary characteristics of soil: the physical, chemical and biological, and the components of each that need to be addressed to improve soil health. This course also demonstrates easy-to-use field tests to identify current soil conditions and highlights the common practices that a farmer may choose to implement in order to improve soil conditions. This course is blended online course that must be completed before the field component and is a prerequisite for a series of supplemental soil health courses.
The one-day, intermediate-level field training will build on the online course topics through hands-on activities and farm scenarios. The field training will focus on the evaluation of various agricultural practices on soil health parameters and selling these concepts to producers. Participants will utilize basic evaluation methods to document soil, water and plant properties in the field. Activities will develop participants’ data collection, communication and problem-solving skills through in-field case studies. The cost of this course is included in the online Soil Health course, which must be completed before the training takes place on October 16, 2014 at the Bill Spurley farm (2263-2273 County Highway G, Montfort, WI 53569).
