Reading the Wetland Landscape Workshop: Merrill

Course Description:

Course Description:

This field-based workshop will help you view landscapes through a wetland lens.

At this workshop, participants will learn how to:
1.) Gather information that helps you consider the watershed context of site proposals.
2.) Relate concepts of wetland connectivity and landscape position to water resource management concerns.
3.) Understand the potential links between wetland functions, and zoning and conservation goals, in the implementation of local ordinances.
4.) Address links between wetland functions and zoning goals when applying approval criteria to specific projects.

We will meet briefly in the classroom (approx. one hour) and spend the rest of the day in the field. In the field, participants will learn how to recognize and evaluate degraded and difficult-to-identify wetlands (e.g., farmed, ephemeral, forested). At these sites, we will discuss challenging project scenarios and the wetland considerations that may arise when administering zoning and other local ordinances. Participants will be asked to share perspectives on how their ordinances and programs may or may not apply in certain wetland project scenarios. Additionally, participants will learn about a watershed-scale wetland assessment completed in the Duck-Pensaukee Watershed by The Nature Conservancy. Several of our site visits will be located in this watershed.

Land Conservation Department Staff who are newer or looking for a refresher on evaluating and communicating about wetland functions, may find this workshop informative.
