Karst Areas & Stormwater Management Workshop - Kimberly, Wi - 10/9/14
The East Central Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission, in partnership with the Bay-Lake RPC, UW-Extension and the Niagara Escarpment Resource Network is sponsoring a full day workshop focusing on managing urban and rural stormwater runoff in karst environments. The workshop is set for October 9th, 2014 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Liberty Hall in Kimberly, Wisconsin.
“Karst” is a landscape created when water dissolves rocks such as dolomite and some limestones. The rocks are dissolved along fractures and create sinkholes, caves and other conduits. Water moves readily through these openings, carrying sediment, nutrients, pathogens and other pollutants directly into our groundwater. These environments are very prevalent within Northeast Wisconsin (see map) and many of population centers lie within these zones. In several known cases, these karst sinkholes and local groundwater resources are impacted (or will potentially be impacted) as urban development and stormwater infrastructure are constructed.
This workshop will provide planning and public works staff, consultants and stormwater engineers, as well as elected officials with background information on these issues, as well as the state of current ‘best practices’ that should be considered in these environments. A detailed program and agenda will be made available shortly and will be mailed directly to our affected member communities, as well as being posted on East Central’s website at www.ecwrpc.org. A nominal fee for the event will apply in order to recoup lunch and refreshment costs. Continuing Education certificates for PEs will be available.
Email Ebonnin@ecwrpc.org to register for the event or call Erin Bonnin at 920 751 4770.
